Akshay Kumar gives Rs 1 lakh monthly to 30 drought-struck farmers

Akshay Kumar is undoubtedly the ‘king’ of silver screen but with his recent philanthropist act he proved out to be a real life hero too.

In a sheer display of humanity, the action hero has been providing financial aid to the drought struck farmer families of Maharashtra from the past three-four months.

He is giving Rs 50K to Rs 1 lakh per family every month.

"Akshay has been setting aside amounts ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh per family for a few months. This money is sent to almost 30 families. And, this is not something that he has been doing in tandem with an NGO. His team has been directly involved and in touch with these families," a leading daily quoted an insider.

Notably, Maharashtra has been facing one of its worst droughts. The ghastly natural phenomenon forced many farmers to end their lives leaving behind their families in awful conditions.

A few days back, it was reported that Akshay Kumar has planned to donate Rs 90 lakhs to the farmers’ families. And now it is revealed that he has been providing the financial aid from quite some time now.

In the past also, many celebrities including Nana Patekar, Makrand Anaspure and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane have come forward to help the poor families.
Kudos to their human side!

Movie Review: Katti Batti - Convoluted, cliched and confusing

Film: Katti Batti
Cast: Imran Khan, Kangana Ranaut, Vivan Bhatena, Manasvi Mamgai
Director: Nikhil Advani
Rating: *1/2

Imagine you are riding an unruly mare who trots tossing you about, and then after nearly two hour fifteen minutes of a tumultuous and awful ride, reaches you at your destination, safe and sound.
That is exactly what you would experience while watching Director Nikhil Advani's "Katti Batti".
On the face of it, "Katti Batti" is supposed to be a rom-com between a die-hard romantic and a commitment-phobic girl, at least that's what the trailers promised. But what you get is a potpourri of emotional trajectories offered in a non-linear, confusing and obscure manner.

Narrated from Madhav Kabra (Imran Khan) aka Maddy's point of view, the narration begins with an inexplicable, found footage technique revealing his live-in relationship with Payal Malhotra (Kangana Ranaut). And then we are suddenly thrown into the emergency ward of a hospital where the doctors and Maddy's friends are trying to revive him after his alleged suicide attempt.

After Maddy is successfully revived, we learn that his drinking Phenyl was an accident. And what follows is Maddy's pursuit to convince his ladylove to be friends with him once again. Their on-and-off relationship has now hit rock bottom after 5 years of living together.
Kangana and Imran make a lovely, volatile pair. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable.

On the performance front, the film is Imran Khan's canvas. His is the only character that is well etched. With his look recollecting the charm of Dilton from Archie's comics, Imran is honest, charming and expressively convincing. You like him when he woos his girlfriend, admire him when he sticks to his guns and hate him when he is boorish and callous.

On the other hand, Kangana Ranaut as Payal Malhotra who comes from a broken family, is an extension of the various roles you have seen Kangana perform in her earlier films.

She brings nothing new to the table, except for confidently carrying herself off with a plethora of outlandish wigs, in the staid role.

Of the supporting cast, Vivan Bhatena is wasted in a bland role as Payal's ex-boyfriend, Ricky Ahuja. And Manavsi Mamgai as Devika, Maddy's colleague is passable. But the two characters who really stand out with realistic performances are Maddy's sister Koyel and his friend Vinay.

And with the director's sense of infusing humour, the rest of the supporting cast like Varghese Bhai the estate agent, Mr. Ramalingam - Maddy's south Indian boss, the paan chewing security guard at Payal's house in Delhi and the salesman at Maddy's school friend Tina's shop, are forced caricatures, who are duds with their over-the-top histrionics.

The script written by director Nikhil Advani and Anshul Singhal has a convoluted screenplay riddled with forced humour and glaring plot holes which include underdeveloped characterisations.

For example, Payal is a complex character with perfunctory depth to carry the tale forward. With her family and back story missing, hers is a half-baked character that is cardboard thin.

Also the script is punctuated with songs that do not elevate the viewing experience. The numbers except for the last one are laborious and ear-sores. They explain the situation but neither do they take the story forward nor do they reveal anything new.

As for the direction of this film, like his previous film "Hero", this one too, is carelessly mounted with conviction of formulaic Hindi masala films.

But what the director does not realise is that too much masala could spoil his film, at least for the audience.

Overall, the tragedy of "Katti Batti" lies in the fault of its director.

Salman Khan cried his heart-out on the sets of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

Salman Khan’s magical smile wins our heart every time. He carries the positive and happy waves wherever he goes, thanks to his larger than life persona.

But what if we tell you that the superstar recently cried on the sets of ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’?
Yes! This happened during the shoot of an emotional scene of the upcoming movie.

Salman was shooting with Sonam Kapoor and he was supposed to deliver some heart-touching dialogues to create the whole emotional feel.

But, Dabangg Khan got too much involved in the scene that he couldn’t hold back his tears and broke down like never before.

Seeing him emotional, the entire cast of the movie including Director Sooraj Barjatya got nostalgic.
It seems, Salman is all geared up to touch the audiences’ heart deeply with his next flick, even more than he did in Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

"BB was about Hindu-Muslim ties and the story was about beyond the borders. But Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will bring out the internal conflicts in families…between brothers and sisters. So just prepare yourselves and hold your tears,” Salman said once.

Though, no visuals or photos are available of Salman's latest ‘emotional’ moment and we can only imagine how it would have been looked like.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is all set to hit the box office this Diwali. Definitely, it would be a tough task for the audiences to stop their tears while seeing their favourite superstar’s emotional avatar on the screen. But we are game!

Bollywood perfectionist Aamir Khan has crushed the hopes of millions of his twitter followers who are wishing to get one reply from the 'Dangal' actor.

Aamir broke millions of hearts when he replied to celebrity photographer Avinash Gowariker's question as to what should one do to get a reply from Aamir, to which the actor replied, "@avigowariker Either look like Sunny Leone, or ask stupid questions like this one!!!"

The conversation initiated after Sunny Leone complimented Aamir for his 'hot' looks in an advertisement even though he has put on weight for his upcoming film. Tweeted Sunny, "Hey @aamir_khan saw you in the Snapdeal Ad. Motte or not, you still look hot! Love you.

Item Song and Bollywood...

A rustic setting. A large group of bawdy, drunk men. A slender woman in the center. The camera zooms in and out on her thrusting chest, as the men around her lustily letch at her…

No, this is not a description of a scene from a B-grade movie and neither it is a part of some sad documentary. It is a scene from an item number in a mainstream Hindi Cinema. I do not name the song or the movie because it doesn’t matter. You can change the setting a little bit and maybe the number of men in the background, and this description will fit any item song that has come out in recent memory.

Bollywood and the culture of voyeurismItem songs

Item Songs in Bollywood have always been an integral part of the movie – which is surprising since they seldom have anything to do with the actual movie. Baby Doll did not change the outcome in the story of Ragini MMS 2, neither did Munni Badnam Hui had any major implication of Dabangg’s story. And yet, they were arguably few of the most famous bits of the movie. These item songs were the tools that were used as attractors to increase the box-office collections.  And filmmakers seem to have adapted this formula as a no-brainer now. The more indecent the song is, the more innuendo-filled the lyrics are – the catchier it becomes. The formula of combining these provocative lyrics with a super catchy tune is being followed so blindly, that they fail to see the impact it is having on the society and the women. As bad as it may sound, the item songs have encouraged a number of problems, socially, for women. Ask any woman you know and she will tell you that she has lost count of how many times she was pestered or pursued on the street by men suggestively cat-calling her Baby Doll or pestered by someone humming Sone Ka Paani or Shiela ki Jawani while following her down the street.

How are item songs a part of this problem?

The defenders of item songs often come up with the argument that the problem is with the individuals who carry out these acts. They believe that the men, who do harass women, will continue to do it with or without these songs.  While this is true, the effect of these factors on the psyche of the masses cannot be denied.

1. Women are usually shown wearing skimpy clothes and dancing in a provocative manner. While there is definitely no issue with women or men wearing whatever clothing they want, both on and off screen, it is important to understand that the barely-there clothes here are being used as an invitation for the men dancing around the ‘item-girl’ to openly lust at her. The hands reaching out for Sunny Leone is Baby Doll and Katrina Kaif being swung like a prey above and ocean of lustful men in Chikni Chameli, are just two examples of this.

2. Women dancing for the pleasure of men – and the Hero. No woman, in any of these songs that have come out recently, has been shown to dance out of her own joy or accord. When the song is a part of the movie, they are usually specifically called for this purpose to dance for the pleasure of men, often just to accompany the male lead.

3. The difference in the attitude of men and women is the problem. Put simply, item songs are a problem because they tell men that it is okay for them to treat women like they want to. It’s okay to stare at her chest or  her butt, it’s okay to call her whatever you want, it is okay for you to touch her inappropriately – you are entitled to do this. She has no say in it.

What is even worse is that not even our leading ladies shy away from doing such numbers. They need to understand the responsibility that rests with them. By being a part of such songs where they are subjected to lusty gazes and inappropriate touching, they are basically telling their audience that it’s okay to behave like this with any woman. In a culture like ours, cinema shapes us more than the other way around. Rang De Basanti brought about so many successful candle-march revolutions, DCH and ZNMD made road trips cool, Bajrangi Bhaijaan made Indians and Pakistanis come closer – it is obvious that movies have incredible power over us. Then isn’t it time where we start talking about the negative effects these have on our society as well?

Movie Review: Calendar Girls

$
0
0
One of our biggest fallacies believed that Madhur Bhandarkar’s films are rooted in reality. They never were and seven years after Priyanka Chopra sizzled in Fashion, Calendar Girls has nothing that he hasn’t shown us in that film before. If you want to jot down his recipe of this disaster, here’s how it rolls – 1 kilo of Fashion, 500 gms of Page 3, 500 gms of Heroine, 100 gms of Corporate and 50 gms of Jail, with a sprinkling of fresh tacky actresses to top up this fiasco.

The film stinks of Madhur’s past mistakes and you can’t help but feel bad for people like Suhel Seth, who’ve gone so bankrupt that they needed to sell their soul to this devilish confection. Mr Seth, we bet a few of your fans are hospitalized after watching you in this debacle.

In an attempt to torture people lesser than what we suffered, we will keep the plot minimalistic in this – five girls are handpicked to don the glossy pages of a popular fashion calendar but not all become survivors. We hardly ever notice these perfect-porcelain-faced beauties that are unmemorable enough to slip into oblivion. The film quite mirrors than and doesn’t even aspire to join higher ranks of its director’s works.

Madhur has always romanced formula more than logic. But, his passion for his work was always evident in his previous movies. The filmmaker’s journey from Chandni Bar to Calendar Girls is a handbook of do-nots. In his earlier movies, he had the advantage of using actors with caliber but he has never been the one to extract poignant performances from his artistes. Be it Priyanka, Konkona or Tabu, for that matter, they all are accomplished actors who rightly judged their respective screenplays and moulded themselves to the tee for the challenging parts they played. Madhur’s inadequacies as a solid filmmaker became evident in this film with his wrong choice of actors. None of his debutantes are promising, a few less bad than the others, but none remotely qualify actors. Akanksha Puri, Ruhi Singh are slightly better than others but none worth a mention after the end credits roll down.

As far as it story goes, the film revisits Bhandarkar staples – sleazy CEOs, mudslinging, gossipy socialites, gay designers insecure about their sexual identities, the menacing black man gets replaced by a white man et al. Imagaries are starkly reminiscent of his previous works but missing the streak of his erstwhile genius.

Probably, the main reason why the film doesn’t work is because it is dated and repetitive. Bhandarkar revisits his classic formula which is now almost a decade old. He doesn’t attempt anything inventive which makes this film a tragic bore. Secondly, it has a bunch of really bad actors. Expecting subtlety is asking for too much, but these not-so-drop-dead-gorgeous shrieky ladies fail to make a strong case for the film. There are tackily dressed, dreary looking clones who have the same physique and face, and if you don’t look too intently, they’ll look the same to you. With copy-paste expression and melodramatic faces, the girls’ performances come close to a nightmare. Satarupa with her Bongy diction is far from being a bombshell her character should ideally be. Avani Modi, has a better hold over her character but suffers from a dismally written part. Their dukh-bhari kahani will barely interest you and before you know the film will pat you to nap.

While you wouldn’t hold a grudge against the film had it not been as regressive as it is. Which world is the film set in? When a Raj Babbar denied Priyanka a career of her choice in Fashion, it was contrived but still made some sense. Probably that’s the quality to good actors; they lift up the conviction of your film. Ofcourse, Calendar Girls has none of the plusses and is replete with the detestable concoction of promiscuity, lies, power games and how innocent souls are entrapped in this.
With too much of his quintessential exaggerated dramatics taking the center stage, Calendar Girls is neither the sensational commercial caper it aspires to be nor the palpable expose it would’ve preferred. It is a misfire and an acute case of talent deterioration. Madhur Bhandarkar of Chandni Bar – May you RIP. Madhur Bhandarkar of Calendar Girls – Mr Sajid Khan of pseudo-grim films, may we never have to see you again.  Avoid the drudgery.

Deepika Padukone was honoured with the 'Woman of the Year' award GQ Awards which are underway in Mumbai currently.

Deepika who has had quite a year with her controversial Vogue Women Empowerment video, the success of 'Piku' and her revelation of suffering from depression seemed radiant as she accepted the honour of being adjudged the 'Woman of the Year'.

The talented actress looked stunning in a white gown and seemed poised as usual on the red carpet leading to the ceremony.

Movie Review: Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon

$

Kapil Sharma might enjoy an overwhelming fan following but the fact remains that he is no actor. He is a comic and far from being an understated one at that. He is loud, juvenile and in the case of this film, he seems disinterested to play up his hit vivacious side. It can't be good news that Arbaaz Khan has more laughs to offer than Kapil, with his Madhusudhan Phupha-ji reinvented avatar.

Varun-Choocha-Sharma's impromptu gags were crackling. To put it bluntly, most actors in this film were better than Kapil who barely manages to evoke a smile with all his puerile antics on display. It is disappointing that the man who entertains prime-time audiences better than Arnab does in his Newshour, is mediocre in his debut film. Stage-fright, performance pressure and his attempt to portray himself differently pulls down Kapil. Varun and Arbaaz are left to pull the film on their wobbly shoulders, with poorly written characters to play.

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon is the story of a man who by 'haadsa' marries three women, while being in love with a fourth lady. The ladies become bffs, staying in the same building, chugging to healthy juices over jogs and are still oblivious to the fact that they are married to the same schmuck. In Abbas-Mustan's funny world women are bimbettes and men are clearly overachievers. Without even getting into how chauvinistic the story is, the problem is that it barely manages to make you smile (unless, you have a contrived sense of humour or are laughing at the film).

For those who are looking for genuine fun, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon would make you wanna weep copious tears. Since when has fun dumbed down this miserably? We've grown up spending our Sunday lunches relishing mamma's chicken curry and laughing at Govinda's plight in Saajan Chale Sasural. This film despite being set in an era of far superior finesse than the Govinda starrer, is too superficial to make something as palpable. Added to that, Govinda was a master of such roles. It is nearly impossible for any actor to come close to his quick and perfect judgement of jest.

You wish the film had enough mettle to entertain you but this situational comedy suffers not only from lack of novelty but also from lack of zest. Kapil hardly shows the promise that his television audiences swear by. Bollywood waters are testy terrains and the first wrong foot can often be decisive. In Kapil's case, this unimpressive first impression will linger.

The film's falling logic screams at your face in the climax and by then you've run out of patience to tolerate the foolishness that its actors indulge in. There is a scene in which Kapil is drunk out of his wits and his too-hard-to-look sharabi act is clumsily done. It is unfortunate that everyone associated with the film has made this mess with the pre-conceived notion in their minds that our IQ too runs in negative, just like theirs. Missing the essential laughable quality, the film keeps you straight faced till the last scene when you want to ram the writer's head through the wall for advocating polygamy so conveniently.

This hare-brained, idiotic buffoonery stoops too low for laughs and if you have any dignity and an inkling of respect for humour, give Kapil Sharma's debut debacle a miss. As Mrs Funnybones writes, nothing is life is sacred, except laughter....Respect it!

Poonam Jhawer, who played the character of ‘Radhe Maa’ in Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Oh My God’, is trying her very best to be in the limelight nowadays.

The item girl, who began her B-town career with Mohra, was recently in news because of her brother’s murder too. The lady was said to have solved the case single-handedly without the help from the cops.

After this the expose of self-styled godwoman Radhe Maa brought her to limelight again, as people connected with her through the role she played in the movie.

Now, she is back again to woo the people. Not with her acting skills, but some smoking hot pictures.

Messi's knee injury won't require surgery

Good news, Barcelona supporters, Lionel Messi will not require surgery for a knee injury sustained during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Las Palmas.

Further, Argentina national team doctor Donato Villani claims the 28-year-old will return earlier than the initial sideline assessment of 7-8 weeks.

"This is not damage that requires surgery," Villani told Argentina daily Ole. " It will heal with time off from play as the first step and then kinesiology.

"I have known Leo for years and I have no doubt that he is going to be ready to play again in the shortest time possible, maybe before the date that was estimated."

Messi sustained the injury in the opening stages of the game when he cut in from the right wing before having his shot blocked by defender Pedro Bigas.

After receiving treatment, Messi attempted to continue before being replaced by Munir El Haddadi as Barca fans held their collective breaths in fear of a long-term injury.

Rest assured, Barcelonistas, Villani is here to assuage all of your concerns.
"The injury was to the ligament on the inner part of the knee, a ligament that is extra-articular, that obviously suffers injury like any other ligament, but this one is outside the joint. He avoided a valgus force injury of the joint, it is not a tear that needs surgery.

"This ligament injury takes about six to eight weeks to heal. After that time, the player can be ready to return with no further problems."

Despite initial assessments, Villani expects Messi's recovery time to be far shorter than initially assumed.
"I am sure of it because Leo is a player who goes crazy when he can't play, when he doesn't have the ball and that is why his rehab will go quickly and in the best way because he is a professional.
"His desire to return to plan and his will to get better will have great influence. He always wants to play."

Ranveer Singh debuted on celluloid with the refreshing 'Band Baaja Baarat' opposite Anushka Sharma and then also romanced her in his second film 'Ladies V/s Ricky Bahl'. And then the two actors were rumoured to be romantically involved with each other only to part ways few months later.

However, both Ranveer and Anushka surprised us by playing lovers in Zoya Akhtar's 'Dil Dhadakne Do' earlier this year, and guess what, they were absolutely bang on! Now if the rumour mills are to be believed, both Ranveer and Anushka are all set to team up yet again for Aditya Chopra's 'Befikre'.

According to reports, Aditya Chopra was impressed by Ranveer and Anushka's chemistry in DDD and was keen to cast them in a YRF film together. With Adi returning to direction seven years after 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi', which incidentally marked Anushka's debut, B-town is buzzing with news of Chopra senior roping in Ranveer and Anushka for his daring love story.

However, there is no official announcement that has been made.

We shall have to wait and watch for this one, but lets admit it, they indeed make a great couple!

Justin-Selena in a relationship

Pop sensation Justin Bieber has opened up about his failed relationship with ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.

“We were so in love,” the 21-year-old said. “Nothing else mattered. We were all about each other. But when it’s like that and you get your value from that, people will always disappoint you. Your girl or your dude, they’re always going to disappoint you. Your full identity can’t be in that person. My identity was in her. Her identity was in me.”

Bieber and Gomez, 23, were in a relationship from December 2010 until January 2013, but for another couple of years tabloid reports occasionally emerged that the pair was in an on-and-off romance.

When asked what he had learned from his time with Gomez, Bieber jokingly replied, “I learned a lot. I moved in with my girlfriend when I was 18. Started my own life with her. It was a marriage kind of thing. Living with a girl, it was just too much at that age. “When stuff would happen, I would lose my freakin’ mind, and she would lose her mind, and we would fight so hard because we were so invested in each other. Love is a choice. Love is not a feeling. People have made it seem in movies that it’s this fairy tale.”

Forbes has come out with its list of the world’s highest paid actresses. Based on data from Nielsen, Box Office Mojo and IMDB, the list features the earnings of the leading ladies from June 1, 2014 to June 1, 2015.

1. Jennifer Lawrence - $52 million. Jennifer Lawrence tops the list with a whopping $52 million in earnings, more than any of her competition. Her signature role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games trilogy established her as a female action hero, facilitating her to negotiate a share in the profits made by the movies.

2. Scarlett Johansson - $35.5 million. Scarlett Johansson is quickly climbing the reputation and reimbursement ladder in Hollywood, thanks to movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Lucy, where she played the solo heroine. She commands over $10 million a movie and boosts her bank balance with Dolce & Gabbana and Sodastream endorsements.

3. Melissa McCarthy - $23 million. Melissa McCarthy laid hands on her largest ever annual paycheck after the hefty success of 2015's Spy and 2014's Tammy which grossed a combined $335 million worldwide. After proving her ability to carry movies single-handedly, the Bridesmaids actress has moved to fashion and is launching an all size clothing line.

4. Bingbing Fan - $21 million. Bingbing Fan is the first non-American to join this list. The lady garnered a place with her role in the movie The White-Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom. Her role in X-Men: Days of Future Past is probably the one that made her famous among Hollywood cine-buffs.

5. Jennifer Aniston - $16.5 million. Despite her movies Cake and comedy Horrible Bosses 2 earning just $108.6 million combined, Jennifer Aniston still raked in $16.5 million in the scoring period. Endorsement deals with Aveeno, SmartWater and Living Proof are the reason for her huge bank balance.

6. Julia Roberts - $16 million. Owing to hefty deals with fashion & beauty brands Lancome, Givenchy and Calzedonia, Julia Roberts has made a comeback to the rankings.

7. Angelina Jolie - $15 million. Angelina Jolie is a regular actress on this list. Currently, the lady is shooting for her upcoming flick ‘By The Sea’ where she plays a special envoy for the U.N. on the refugee issue.

“Titanic” star Kate Winslet has revealed she keeps her Oscar gong, which she won for her role in “The Reader”, in her bathroom.

“The whole point is for everybody to pick it up and go, ‘I’d like to thank my son and my dad’ – and you can always tell when someone has, because they’re in there a little bit longer after they flushed,” she said.

“They’ll come out looking slightly pink-cheeked. It’s hysterical.”

Winslet, 39, said she feels proud not to reveal much about her failed marriages to Jim Threapleton (1998-2001) and Sam Mendes (2003-11).

“No one really knows what has happened in my life. No one really knows why my first marriage didn’t last; no one knows why my second didn’t. And I’m proud of those silences.

“I know lots of people who are not in the public eye who have gone through several marriages, I really do, and it’s just those are the cards that life dealt me. I didn’t plan on it being that way… It hasn’t been easy, you know.”

Not many are aware that Vikas Bahl’s forthcoming film, ‘Shaandaar’ starring Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt is not just about a destination wedding, but is in fact a love story between two insomniacs.

Shahid and Alia’s characters in the film are unable to sleep and so the makers of the film bought the rights of the popular track from the 1958 film Post Box 999, Neend Na Mujhko Aaye (picturised on Sunil Dutt and Shakeela). For Shaandaar, the romantic number has been recreated by Mikey McCleary and picturised on Alia and Shahid. The song, originally sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar fits perfectly in this film about insomniacs.

Director Vikas Bahl confirmed the news, saying, “Yes, it is true. Shahid and Alia are playing characters who are suffering from insomnia, which is, inability to get sleep. Insomnia is something most people have gone through at some point in their life which makes the film and their characters extremely relatable.”

‘Shaandaar’ is all set to release on 22nd October, 2015.
